Advanced Open Water - Pro Dive Cairns

CoralPassengers can participate in the PADI Advanced Open water course during their 3 day 2 night liveaboard trip. The trip visits up to four easterly outer Great Barrier Reef locations, taking in sites selected for their extravagance of marine life and excellent visibility. This course is your next step in continuing your dive education. It is designed to give the newly certified, or not so experienced diver, added confidence and enjoyment in their diving through additional skills and training. Prerequisite for this course is a PADI Open water certificate or equivalent with another training agency.

There are no formal training sessions involved in the Advanced course but students will be given the PADI ĎAdventures in diving' manual to read and will be required to answer the relevant knowledge review questionnaires for each of your training dives.

Sea turtle The schedule allows for a total of 11 dives with 5 of these dedicated to your Advanced course training and the other 6 are recreational dives for you to explore and enjoy the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

Your Advanced training consists of 5 training dives being Deep Diving, Underwater Navigation, Night Diving, Underwater Naturalist and a choice from one of the following elective dives: Search & Recovery or the popular Underwater Photography.

Courses Commence

  • English courses commence every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday
  • German speaking staff available onboard Thursday & Sunday departures
  • Japanese speaking staff available onboard Saturday departures

Itinerary - subject to change

  • Day 1:
    • Dive 1+2: Two pleasure dives to give you an introduction to diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Also a great opportunity for you to acclimatise to diving conditions, fine tune your skills or even to refresh your skills if it has been some time since your last dive.
    • Dive 3: Advanced Course Navigation Dive
    • Dive 4: Advanced Course Night Dive - an introduction to night diving on the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Day 2:
    • Dive 1: Advanced Course Deep Dive - During this dive we will give you the experience to safely conduct dives beyond your 18 metre depth limit as an open water diver.
    • Dive 2: Underwater Naturalist - learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and its ECO system.
    • Dive 3: Elective Dive - Introduction to other interesting areas of diving, and your choice of Underwater Photography or Search and Recovery.
    • Dive 4: Night Dive - Your chance to use the skills you learnt as part of your Advanced Course yesterday.

  • Day 3: The last 3 dives of the trip are done on 2 different dive sites, and are your last chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef before returning to Cairns after lunch.

Dive Sites

  • Milln Reef - perfect introduction to the outer reef, relaxed and varied, sleeping turtles
  • Flynn Reef - excellent visibility, a photographic haven
  • Gordons - intriguing coral mazes which end at "Clown Fish City"
  • Coral Gardens - magnificent coral enlivened by a myriad of marine life
  • Pellowe Reef - exclusive pristine dive destination (weather permitting)
  • Thetford Reef - outlying bommies with swim throughs (weather permitting)
  • Weather permitting, we never dive the same dive site more than twice.

  • PADI Advanced manual in either English or German
  • Accommodation transfers city and Northern Beaches
  • 11 Dives (weather permitting)
  • 2 nights accommodation on board vessel (no extra for twin cabins)

Fish with coral Requirements

  • 2 x Passport Photos - these can be arranged by Pro Dive Cairns (free of charge)
  • Open Water Certification or equivalent.
  • Minimum age is 15 years, with no maximum age, however any participant that holds a PADI Junior Open Water certification may be eligible.
  • An dive medical may be required. Some medical conditions may prevent you from diving. Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and pregnancy are the most common ones encountered.
